Sobre o festival
Founded in 2017, the Hortênsia Music Festival (HMF) is an annual celebration of classical music in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira Island in the Azores. Each summer, the festival brings renowned Portuguese and international musicians to the island for a dynamic programme of chamber music concerts, masterclasses, workshops, and outreach initiatives.
Centered on performance, pedagogy, and community, HMF was created to share artistic experience across generations and to open meaningful cultural encounters in the Azores. The festival is founded on the belief that artistic excellence flourishes most powerfully when guided by inclusivity and offered as an open and meaningful part of a community’s cultural life.
Through masterclasses and other learning opportunities, young musicians are able to work closely with experienced artists, gain new perspectives, and develop their musical voice in an inspiring and supportive environment. Initiatives such as Incentivo Artístico Açores further strengthen the connection between local talent and visiting performers, fostering exchange, encouragement, and growth.
Surrounded by the extraordinary landscape of the Azores and shaped by the character of Angra do Heroísmo, Hortênsia Music Festival offers an experience where music, heritage, and community are closely intertwined, contributing to the cultural life of the region and affirming the city as a vibrant meeting point for artistic dialogue and discovery.

Bem-vindos ao HMF
We are grateful and excited to be presenting in 2026 the 8th edition of Hortênsia Music Festival. Since 2017, the festival has brought together musicians, students, and audiences in a shared spirit of music, learning, and exchange. The support of the community of Angra do Heroísmo has made this possible, and continues to be a vital part of the festival’s life.
The 8th edition carries a particular sense of energy. Under the theme Erupção Musical / Musical Eruption, celebrating the volcanic origins of the Azores, we embrace ideas of transformation, intensity, and creative vitality, shaping a programme marked by bold contrasts, discovery, and expressive force.
We are especially proud to present the world premiere of a newly commissioned chamber work by António Pinho Vargas, our Composer in Focus for this edition, and excited to welcome a number of distinguished artists joining HMF for their first appearance, including the globally acclaimed soprano Siobhan Stagg, and outstanding string players Maria-Elisabeth Lott, Kyril Zlotnikov, Jack Liebeck, Hiyoli Togawa and Shenghan Gao. Their presence, together with some of our most cherished returning artists — pianists Matan Porat and Anna Ulaieva, and the brothers Hrachya and Sevak Avanesyan — gives this edition a particularly special sense of richness and anticipation.
What continues to matter most to us is the spirit in which it all takes place — a spirit of curiosity, collaboration, and shared discovery. It is a joy to see the festival continue to grow in this way, and a privilege to share it with such an engaged and generous community.
To all who make the festival possible, a heartfelt thanks.
We look forward to welcoming you all to Hortênsia Music Festival 2026.
